Make money with Google AdSense

Posted on:

Google AdSense is the most popular advertising network for online advertisement. If you are looking for making money from your website, Google AdSense can be the perfect solution.
This guide will explain you all about Google AdSense - Registration, getting approved, reasons for not getting approved, adsense alternatives and other important factors. Curious to know how much you can earn? Read on...

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense Before I take you through the process of monetizing your website, let’s first know a little about AdSense. Google AdSense is one of the world’s largest advertising networks and of course the most popular among publishers (otherwise you may have been searching something else!). If you have a website or a blog, you can sign in to Google AdSense and start displaying ad contents in your website or blog immediately. In turn, Google pays you on per-click basis. You are free to choose the format of ad contents from a large-variety like text, image, video and rich media. You can also choose from the pre-defined sizes and can decide where you like these ads to appear on your website. You can even customize the ads to match with your website look. However, the actual content of the ad is controlled by Google and in most of the cases it will be relevant to your website’s audience. This is because the ad contents served by Google AdSense are generally based on your website’s content and geographical location of the user.

Great, so are you ready for making money with Google AdSense?

You have a website and a good number of daily visitors and if you can make some money out of this, why not give it a try? Good number of visitors means how many – this we will discuss later on. Even if you think your website is just for fun or for information about something, you should give it a try. But wait, you need to fulfill some guidelines from Google before you should proceed. First thing first, if you have your website primarily based on any of the following, you better search some alternative to make money; it is sad but Google AdSense is not for you:

  • Adult content
  • Copyrighted material
  • Drug, alcohol, and tobacco-related content
  • Gambling content
  • Violent content
  • Weapon-related content
  • Content that advocates against an individual, group, or organization
  • Hacking and cracking content
  • Sensitive content
  • Sites that offer compensation programs
  • Sites that use Google Brand features
  • Other illegal content

This list is what Google keeps in blacklist for AdSense as of now. But don’t get disappointed; there are a few alternatives to AdSense which we will discuss later on. If your website is not among these blacklisted topics, you can get into the AdSense boat.

How does Google AdSense Work?

Before getting into registration process, why not have basic know-how of the AdSense mechanism? For your information, Google earns a big pie of its revenue from ads which it shows in search results. For displaying these ads, the website owners sign in to Google AdWords, a program which manages the advertisement, bids and monetary transactions. When you join AdSense, these advertisements are displayed on your website and in turn Google pays you a percentage that it gets from advertisers. What percentage? Well it is not disclosed by Google but analysts say it is between 60%-70%. Google AdSense is really easy to implement and it saves you from the trouble of selling the ad space manually . You can instantly start showing advertisements on your website and earn a handsome amount. How much…let’s get into it!

How much will you earn with Google AdSense?

This is one of the most asked questions about AdSense. How much you earn with AdSense will greatly depend on the number of visitors and the type of your website content. Say you have a website which gives the information on mobile phones. So, mostly the ad contents displayed by AdSense will be related to mobile phones. Now, the price of advertisement per click depends on the keywords competitiveness. You may get anywhere between a few cents to a few dollars depending on how much Google is charging advertisers for that ad. The keywords which are searched more have more cost and in turn, you get a high commission for these keywords. There are people who are earning in six figures with just Google AdSense, but they have thousands of visitors coming to their websites each day.

Let’s make out a rough estimate on how much you should expect

If you reading this article, the chances are you have a comparatively new website and here I will take into consideration this factor for arriving to some figure. Say currently your website attracts about 100-200 unique visitors per day. Your website is well organized and you get about 600 page views daily. As per Google AdSense policy, you can display a maximum of three ads on each page. So, if you decide to put all three ads on each page of your website, the total number of ad impressions for your website on each day is about 1800.

How much of these impressions convert into clicks will depend upon many factors like their placement in the website, type of visitors, format of the ad content, etc. It has been observed that the traffic brought to your website by organic search results (new visitors) tends to click the advertisements more than your regular visitors. Seems strange? The fact is your loyal visitor will most likely not leave your website whereas the new visitor will immediately get attracted to the ads if he or she does not get the required information.

Okay, but there is no harm in making just an estimate here. So for 1800 ad impressions, there can be approximately 10 clicks. If everything goes as per this calculation, at the end of the month you may expect to get about 300 clicks.

Now for each ad click, if we take a conservative earning of $0.5, your earning for the month comes out to be $150.

Google does not reveal the earning for any clicked ad, but you may make an estimate by logging into the AdSense account. For example, if you see that the total earning for a day is $10 for 10 clicks, you are getting a commission of $1 for each click. You may also have a detailed look on your earnings day, month and year wise with Google AdSense online reports.

Please note that we have assumed that your website is fairly new and you have currently low traffic. It logical to understand that with small number of visitors, your earnings will be low. But, as your website grows, your earnings will be multiplied. The thumb rule for generating more income from Google AdSense is to attract more and more numbers of targeted visitors to your website which you can do with website optimization and making your websites search engine friendly. You can go through my advice on improve Google ranking for your new website. These are all very simple steps to implement and will not cost you any money. At the same time, your website will rank higher to attract more and more visitors which will help you to improve your earnings with AdSense.

Fair enough, I would like to join AdSense

Great, so you are ready to join AdSense. Have a look at a few suggestions so that your application gets approved without any problem.

  • Make sure your website has more than 20 relevant pages with quality contents
  • You have at least 50 numbers of unique daily visitors
  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You should own your website for at least six months

The last requirement is only for a few locations including china and India. This is because of the rampant Google AdSense scam, where the webmasters create the website just to make income from AdSense. To top this, a bunch of webmasters will create a group and click on ads displayed on the websites of each other to make money. Google marks these clicks as invalid clicks and blocks the AdSense account of such webmasters. As per Google AdSense policy, you cannot click on the advertisement displayed on your website even for testing purpose.

For joining Google AdSense, visit adsense.google.com and fill the form to apply. Within seven days, your application will be reviewed by Google team and you will be notified with your application status. If you are through, you can log in to AdSense and customize the ad contents for your website. You can choose to display the advertisements either in horizontal direction like banners or in vertical direction or even in a square box. Once you customize your advertisements, you will be provided with the html codes which you need to put in each page of your website where you want these ads to appear. That’s it…!

Why my website is not getting approved?

As I mentioned earlier, you must be fulfilling the AdSense criteria and must not fall within the unacceptable contents list. But even then if your website is not getting approved, there may be several reasons.

  • Your website does not have enough content (at least 20 pages)
  • The website contents are not original – make sure the contents have not been published anywhere else, even on any other website or blog which you own
  • You are the owner of your website for at least six months – especially for Asian countries
  • Your website contents are diversified and not centered about some unique topic

Apart from these, also have a look at your website appearance. Does it look too unprofessional? Have you checked the grammar and spellings? Have you provided a good navigation structure for your visitors?

Try to revamp your website and hire some help if you are not sure what may be causing your website for not getting approval. Generally, in return email, Google will notify you with the broad reason of denial like inappropriate content or insufficient content, but it is very hard to make out the real cause with that information. Here again, you can keep trying after making suitable modifications and reviewing your website.

One more thing – once any of your website gets approval, you can use the same html code to other websites without seeking additional approvals. Only thing is your other websites should meet the AdSense program policies. So, if you are having more than one website, try with someone with which you are more confident.

Reasons for getting banned from Google AdSense

The most prominent reason for getting banned from Google AdSense is invalid clicks . As mentioned earlier, you are prohibited from clicking on ads displayed on your website even for testing purpose. You should also make sure that you are using the standard html code for AdSense exactly as provided. Advertisements should be distinctly identified and should not be confused with actual contents. The maximum number of ads on any page should not be more than three.

These are some basic things you should ensure.

  • Go though Google guidelines for webmaster and ensure you are fulfilling the requirements
  • Don’t click on your own ads and never tell anyone to do so for you
  • Don’t use hidden texts in you web pages
  • Don’t put any comment or note on your web page asking visitors to click on advertisements
  • Don’t disclose your earnings; Google AdSense policy prohibits you from doing that
  • Keep the contents of your web pages original and of good quality
  • Don’t get into selling links on your website

The list is long, my advice is you should never do something wrong and try to trick Google for getting more clicks. Google is getting stricter with its AdSense program and even if they suspect anything wrong, they will ban your account.

The worst part is there is usually no warning from Google and once your account is banned, it is for the life time. In their emails also, they will not reveal much so you will have hardly anything concrete to know the exact reason. You may feel Google is not being reasonable on banning the websites; but they are protecting the advertisers’ money.

So if you have a new website and you have recently been approved for AdSense, be very careful.

Google AdSense Alternatives

If your website is not eligible, not getting approved or has been banned, here is the list of some alternatives you may like to try.

  • Chitika
  • AdBrite
  • Infolinks
  • Media.net
  • Kontera.com
  • Clicksor
  • eBay partner Network
  • Amazon associate program

The list is quite long, you just have to search and get one which you find suitable for you. Although many of them will not give you as much commission as Google, they will serve well as AdSense alternatives. You should also consider joining the affiliate networks. The bottom line is don’t depend entirety on Google AdSense to make money, keep on looking for alternatives.

The last advice

Create a website with good contents which naturally attracts visitors and promote your website as much as you can. Remember, there is no short-cut way to get rich overnight; you need to really put a great effort for earning money with Google AdSense.
